I think I know how john feels. You wait for over a year and it seems like it will never come and then PRESTO!
Everything happens at once.
So what's it like almost two months after LOTTERY's release?
Well you get used to seeing your book in bookstores and something happens that you didn't expect. emails from readers telling you how much they enjoyed your book. I answer each one and will until it gets too much. I value each and every reader.
And then the surprises. Finding out LOTTERY is on the August bestseller list for Elliott Bay Book Store. Seeing LOTTERY on the Bestseller list again for
HAWAII.
So I've taken you on the road to do signings, talks and readings. You've read some reviews and features.I've talked about the book club discussions.
And now?
It's all up to the book sellers and readers.
And out of my hands.
So what am I doing?
Writing.
That's what.
And staying home.
Hanging out on the aft deck of ORION.
Petting my muse.
And working on novel number two.

Pat, your book is pretty popular here in Massachusetts, too. It has prime real estate on all of the bookstore front tables and readers love it.
Would you say the highlight of this entire experience has been the notes people send? I would imagine so.

Hi Pat, Here's one of those notes: I finished Lottery last night. Your book made me laugh out loud, turn pages REALLY fast to see how things were going to turn out, and cry. I cared about Perry and his friends (& Gram, the live person and Gram the voice in his head) so much! And I really loved the ending. I think Perry did exactly what Gram told him not to do: He was smart. I especially liked what happened with David. :)

I really enjoyed the book signing on Saturday. It was so nice to see how excited people are about Lottery. Keep writing, I can't wait for the next one!

John and Perry - two of my favorite guys! But while I only get to see Perry on the page (please include him in another novel!) I get to attend TWO of John's events! NYC and CT. I'm so excited for him. As I was for you when Lottery debuted. The writing community can be a glorious place can't it? Gives a newbie hope, doesn't it, Manic?
I've been waiting for John's book at the libaray! Any day now, I hope...

Already read Lottery, just picked up Look Me in the Eye, along with a couple of other books. So when I get a break in first-draft action, I've got a pile on the nightstand. Cool!

I am immersed in book two - it has taken me by surprise. The kind of premise that wakes you up in the middle of the night and you say "Ah HA!"
I had a character out of place in another manuscript and now she finds a home. Like Lottery it's starting to write itself. I have learned to slow down and think carefully - laying down the structure - the skeleton- before I fill in the details.

Pat, I had a really awesome day yesterday when I thought, "I wrote today, and it feels great and I even feel like a real writer today!"

I'm kicking my second one around as well. I keep telling myself...there's NO pressure...there's NO pressure. I almost believe it.
I see Lottery in every bookstore as I travel around for signings. It's good to be out there, for sure.
