LIFE ON THE HARD...

Thought all my blogger buddies might find it interesting to see what hauling out is like.
7:30 am Orion went into the ways.

The trades picked up so we bounced a bit.
They placed the slings under her belly and hoisted her up.
NOTE: Tooloose and Girl Kitty were in the forward cabin this whole time and none too pleased.

I could hear Tooloose yowling from where I was on the ground...The guys were asking, "What is that sound?"

This is Lo, the driver of the hoist. He is TOTALLY COOL!

Around and around the boatyard we go and where she stops is hopefully close to one of the portapotties...

Here we are up on the Jacks. Those of you who have read LOTTERY can see now why Keith joked about "being on the hard" and "putting jacks on and off"
NOTE:
How do we get into and out of our boat? Check out the 12 foot ladder to our swim steps off the aft.
Now visualize climbing down those at 10 pm to use the aforementioned portapotty...
Ya gotta love the boating life.

Lo looks like he could be a character from Lottery! What a cool job!

My folks lived aboard their boat after they had it hauled to have the hull repaired and painted. Must feel a little odd being up so high. Or worse, not feeling the motion from being on the water. Hope it isn't too long before you get her back in the water. Be careful on that ladder!!

And who said authors don't all live in the lap of luxury.

lol... why not cut out liquid 'lunches' around 6pm, climb down after 9, and you should be good til morning? ;)

Why not stay at Ko Olina? It's right next door and I guarantee you wouldn't have to go to a port-a-potty!

Yeah it was tempting and we just may spring for one night in the hotel but the last time we did Tooloose went wild with the room service and ate everything out of the stocked refer...they charge $5 for a candy bar - not to mention what they charge for mixed nuts.
And the in room massages?
Well who knew one could sign a tab without an opposable thumb...

omg, these pics are fascinating. How long will this process take? The boating life seems so mysterious, with all this hauling out and bouncing (and yowling). Pat, how long have you lived on Orion?

ORION said...

This process will take as long as the boatyard thinks we have money left...
We have lived aboard since 2003 but my husband lived aboard in the Ala Wai (Hawaii) in the '70's...
LITTLE KNOWN FACT:
he lived aboard a 26 ft Pearson called 'Diamond Girl'

Oh, what a life. At least you won't know what it's like to have a flooded basement.

Mind you, our house doesn't toss about during a storm, either.

Hey, I thought your contest was in the comments, three posts ago! No matter, I already have a most excellent copy of your book.

It was chumplet but I got internetless so I have to wait to award the winner so I just kept it up. So if you want to win EMAIL ME AT patricia@patriciawoodauthor.com and tell me how remodeling a kitchen is like writing a novel...

I AM interested in what hauling out looks like, you are my only contact to the sailing world, and the whole thing fascinates me!

BTW, LOL with the opposable thumbs and the cat signing the hotel tab!

You crazy girl! Why didn't you plan to be on vacation when all this was going on?

The boating life is so fascinating. I love your book and the kitchen/novel contest sounds like fun but I'm waiting to enter a contest that has the big prize...a couple of days and nights on your boat. Now that would be fantastic! What a great life you have!

How long will it take to clean her hull? Will you not be able to stay in the boat while that is going on?

Really cool! Love seeing this kind of stuff!

You are a picture taking fiend!

My body will never be the same. 12 hours cleaning and waxing and we are only half way done.
Stay tuned for more photos...

Oh what fun, Pat!! Had to laugh (as usual) at your last posts, too. Especially your Junot reference. Didn't know you two were that tight, lol! He taught at my alma mater years after I graduated, does that count for anything? :)

These pictures are lovely and very interesting. I was impressed by how little clearance there was between the wheels of the lifting device and the water (even though there is a flimsy-looking rail).
And that blue sky, compared to the miserable weather we are having in the UK.

ORION is gorgeous.

Can I come stay with you when I'm back to Hawaii? (shameless moocher here)
