I took a picture of it.
A stone box with a pen and tablet inside that can stay by my bedside. He told me it's for ideas.
The box is covered with dragonflies.
The perfect gift.
This is why we are still married.

First, thanks for the link, and for making nothing off limits, perhaps I should post an addendum to let the readers know that over at the blog... quite a few writers are on my blogroll so I'm sure they have publishing questions, too.
And I love the gift from your hubby. Fabulous that he understands you so well... (I have to practically buy the gift myself for most occasions... sigh)

How long did it take you to write LOTTERY?

But I'll answer your question here-
I started LOTTERY January 2006 and had my first draft finished in March 2006 (three months) but it was a ROUGH draft. I took until the end of May 2006 polishing and editing and then started querying agents May 31- I queried Dorian at the end of June/ start of July and she offered representation July 20. We then spent the next few months (to November 2006) tweaking - I think we did three edits in total- and it was submitted to editors the week after Thanksgiving- it went to auction Dec 6, 2006 and was sold to Putnam.
I got two editorial letters and one marked manuscript from my Putnam editor which were completed by mid January 2007. Copyedits were done by February 2007 and first pass pages done by march 2007. the ARC (advanced reader copy) was produced by April. The hardback came out in mid July (the release date was August 2, 2007.
I am mindful that this is all blazingly fast. But also keep in mind that while I wrote I was writing 7 days a week sometimes 16 to 20 hours a day...
That man is a keeper, fer sure.
I don't want spoilers so I'll have to wait to read the book, which is wrapped up under the tree as of this moment. I requested it from my daughter as a gift. I know she bought me a copy of Look Me In The Eye, too. So I'll have lots of reading in January!
