Starting Thursday December 13.
ON MOM AND MORE
This is the rejuvenation of one of the oldest (first?) book club blogs. Here is your opportunity to chat about LOTTERY
Anything goes: you can ask about research, the publishing process, the literary techniques to make the reader feel "slow", the characterization, the lottery...
See you there.
Also inquiring minds want to know what I got from my husband for my 21st anniversary present (besides dinner in San Francisco).
I took a picture of it.
A stone box with a pen and tablet inside that can stay by my bedside. He told me it's for ideas.
The box is covered with dragonflies.
The perfect gift.
This is why we are still married.

Wow! That husband of yours must be some kind of guy!
Zoroaster's Dog
He is!!!!
OK boys and girls the book club discussion is off and running!
A perfect gift indeed! I may have to drop that idea in my husband's ear...
Great gift, Pat!
What a creative hubby.
Hi Patricia!
First, thanks for the link, and for making nothing off limits, perhaps I should post an addendum to let the readers know that over at the blog... quite a few writers are on my blogroll so I'm sure they have publishing questions, too.
And I love the gift from your hubby. Fabulous that he understands you so well... (I have to practically buy the gift myself for most occasions... sigh)
The discussion is underway and quite fun!
How long did it take you to write LOTTERY?
Brenda the discussion can be reached in the link on today's post (or get to Merry Jelineks's blog by clicking on her name here in comments)
But I'll answer your question here-
I started LOTTERY January 2006 and had my first draft finished in March 2006 (three months) but it was a ROUGH draft. I took until the end of May 2006 polishing and editing and then started querying agents May 31- I queried Dorian at the end of June/ start of July and she offered representation July 20. We then spent the next few months (to November 2006) tweaking - I think we did three edits in total- and it was submitted to editors the week after Thanksgiving- it went to auction Dec 6, 2006 and was sold to Putnam.
I got two editorial letters and one marked manuscript from my Putnam editor which were completed by mid January 2007. Copyedits were done by February 2007 and first pass pages done by march 2007. the ARC (advanced reader copy) was produced by April. The hardback came out in mid July (the release date was August 2, 2007.
I am mindful that this is all blazingly fast. But also keep in mind that while I wrote I was writing 7 days a week sometimes 16 to 20 hours a day...
That man is a keeper, fer sure.
I don't want spoilers so I'll have to wait to read the book, which is wrapped up under the tree as of this moment. I requested it from my daughter as a gift. I know she bought me a copy of Look Me In The Eye, too. So I'll have lots of reading in January!
The box is beautiful!!!
I have already used the pen and paper to jot down some ideas...
Perfect gift! Hope I can meet someone who understands me that well someday!
Thanks so much for answering my question here, Pat. I skimmed your post too fast, as I'm prone to do, and missed the link. I went over and read the discussion, though, and found it VERY interesting! I'm SO happy for you!
Aloha Brenda! The discussion is still underway and will be for a few days- It's been very interesting. It's amazing to hear from readers.
That is a beautiful present!
What a guy!!!! Truly.
I will check out the link--thanks!!!
:-)
And dragonflies for good luck, to boot. Happy Anniversary! The blog book club discussion is a terrific idea; I'm off to check it out! K.
Great! It's still going on over there at mom's.
Oh, that is so nice! What a thoughtful and loving gift!!
That his gift honors your creativity is utterly special. And dragonflies are cool, too ;)
Gorgeous box - love the dragonfly motif. Bravo to your hubby!
That'a beautiful box! What a great gift. And so the question becomes what will Pat get her lovely hubby for Christmas? I'm fishing for ideas cause I still haven't done any Christmas shopping.
Yep, that's a good reason to still be married. He knows you well. It's a beautiful gift.
Oh, what a wonderful gift! Did your husband come ready-made able to pick perfect gifts? Or did you have to train him? Inquiring minds married half as long as you want to know.
;)
Happy anniversary! Well done hubby!
That has to be one of the most beautiful things EVER. I'm a huge fan of dragonflies, and the color red...you are a lucky girl!!
