To satisfy a dream.
I think I first learned about Stonehenge from a National Geographic issue about England. I might have been in first or second grade. My fascination with all things mysterious and ancient was fostered by reading. Someday...I thought. Someday...
There are times we have a dream that is bigger than the thing itself. It gets blown all out of proportion or even may be unattainable. Writing can be like that. Publication can be like that.
But Stonehenge?
It did not disappoint.

I got that feeling, you know? When we came down the highway, down the hill, and THERE IT WAS. Dream come true, absolutely.
My father-in-law, as a young fella in the 60s, hitchhiked to Stonehenge with his little brother. In those days you could walk right up to it. They intended to sleep under the stars there but were so freaked out they got up and kept walking!
I warn you... once you've seen it, you want to go back again...
What an extrordinary experience,,,,especially
when you look up the Orange Prize on
Wikipidia and the talk about it as
"the most prestigous prize in the UK" etc. etc. etc.

Question--are you allowed to go NEAR the stones? I don't know if I've ever seen people standing by the stones, posing by them, are they surrounded so tourists cannot touch them?

I saw Stonehenge about 10 years ago, and I was overwhelmed. England felt very familiar to me, too; it was as if my ancestral voices were speaking to me...
Stonehenge is awesome. Glad you're having fun. My favorite drinks in the U.K. are all juicy. Love the crushed apple juice and . . . shucks, whatever that dark berry is that you see in everything. Can't remember. Oh, and hard cider. Yummm.
I loved Stonehenge too. Honey, we miss you and we're thinking about you!

I was absolutely thrilled to see Stonehenge (and Salisbury Cathedral) on my one and only trip to England back in 1996. Definitely worth seeing!
