Or Maybe....it might have been where the Heathman Hotel placed a signed copy of LOTTERY amongst other signed copies of books from other well-fed and well-housed novelists who stayed at the Heathman Hotel...

I'll go with my first guess and follow my gut instinct. Everytime i override my gut, i regret it. Let's see if it works this time.
While good food is always a heavenly thing. And an Eager audience has got to be a nearly undescribable thing (in a wonderful way). The bookshelf would be exciting and if i'd ever have a book placed there, i'd probably cry. But my vote is for the bathtub!! Gotta be the bathtub!
Why? You are a girl. You live in a boat. I love boats but i've never really been on a boat that can be lived in but i've been in an RV shower/bath. Bruises on my elbows from hitting the walls and worries about enough water in the tank..... No option for soaking... no option for bubbles.... I think the best thing was the bath!

As a guy, I would have gone for the bookshelf.
but the wife, when wishing to relax, takes a myriad of candles, and disappears into the tub, full of very hot water and bubbles.
Apparently, it works....
I think the eager audience is the best thing for any writer---it just is...

Speaking as a published author (and a woman who loves a bathtub), I would have to go for the bookshelf. Imagine my words standing up there, amongst the "real" authors! I can only guess at the authors contained in that bookcase, but considering the size of the bookcase and the appeal of Portland, I'm sure there are some Big Names in there -- how exciting to be next to such!

It's always so funny to see how you react to hotels, boat-living writer that you are.
I say the tub, hands down.
I say it was all these elements that combined in a savory dish for the traveller who needs hand-delivered sustenance, welcome from the locale - smiling faces and wooden shelves that say "you will not be forgotten" - inspiration for the eye, support for the weary back and legs, and a tub of hot steamy water to restore the soul of a writer.

Traveling is all about the people you meet along the way. Food, views, bookcases, beds...all secondary.
